The Boy of Simple Words and Ways

I wrote this one way back circa 2004-ish, if memory serves me right, because I love stories. I love reading, imagining, writing, make-believing, and making up great, crazy stories by myself or with my friends. but what I love most of all is listening to a great storyteller while I close my eyes and let the tale, and my mind along with it, unfold with each word the person utters.

It's magic for me. So of course, when I got around to writing songs on my own, that was one of my goals: to make something people would want to listen to because it sounds pleasant AND it tells a great story. I was playing around with that idea for a long time and adding bits and pieces to my "story". A lot of those were scrapped and abandoned, but one story I had going which I deemed too sad was brought up by one of my siblings. She said it was strong, and even in its most basic, it can carry anything.

Fast forward to 2012, here's a vocal study I made (with the final arrangement in mind) for this 8 year old song. Just fun.

grab my hand and let me pull you up
gaze upon the wonders up above
look upon the trail we trodded on
settle down and listen to my song

and i'll sing about a love so deep
of a boy but he is forced to keep
keep it hidden from the one that he adores
so as not to mess up what the future holds

if he only knew that she felt just the same
he won't hesitate to give her his last name
all he saw was that he'd only bring her shame
words don't feed nobody's plate, just hate and blame

so the boy just kept it bottled in
thinking up of ways to always win
fanning hate to motivate his sins
to the point of losing self and dreams

and then finally he gathered up
all the pride and glitz and battle scars
up to her he went and he confessed
would've done better to a massive wall instead

if he only saw her heart from way back then
he'd have known just what to do, and say and when
all he did was try to be the very best
all along he thought that she would be impressed
but he failed to see her mounting inner strife
to the point of disbelief and tears unwiped
for the root of everything in the first place
she fell for the boy of simple words and ways
